Passport Deadline Forces Many To Camp Out

Posted: 3:40 am MDT June 1, 2009Updated: 7:38 am MDT June 1, 2009

We've been warned for months now that all U.S. citizens must have the necessary travel documents to cross back into the U.S. from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean or Bermuda, yet many don't. In order to comply with the June 1 deadline, some decided to sleep on chairs and on the floor overnight to make sure they filed for a passport.

Socorro resident, Laura Appleby along with several others who camped out Sunday night at the El Paso County Court house are among the thousand applicants who were turned away the day before.

"I was here on Saturday around 6:30 in the morning and the line was all the way over here,” said Appleby, as she showed how the line wrapped around the building. “I was in line for like four hours. I got to this side of the building like half way when they told us that we should come on Monday. So that's why I’m camping out.”

Appleby who commutes to Juarez about four times a weeks said waiting until the last minute to apply for a passport has been hectic.

"You could hear people yelling because people were trying to get in line. People were fighting, I was like 'oh my gosh,‘” said Appleby.

Sunday night, some parents came out with their little ones and slept on the ground with blankets and pillows, others brought the essentials to stay awake. "We got chairs, blankets, magazines, drinks my aunt brought burritos and cookies,” added Appleby.

The District Clerk's office begins processing applications at 8 a.m., and remember they only take about 400 people. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said though today everyone crossing back from Juarez must have a passport, they will be flexible in implementing the new regulations, but those who don't have the necessary documents may have to wait longer to cross back.
