Victim Of Swine Flu Was Mother Of Four

Two East El Paso residents with confirmed cases of swine flu, including a mother of four, die of complications.

On Friday, El Paso Public Health Department officials said a 42-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman fell victims to the swine flu.

"She was always fun loving and always had a smile on her face," said Ricardo Pinon, the father of Jessica Avalos, one of the victims of the swine flu.

Avalos spent a week in a hospital before dying from complications of swine flu. She was already seven months pregnant when doctors performed an emergency Caesarean section because of the complications.

"She had been sick off and on from cold symptoms, but we didn't know really what it was what she had," said Pinon.

Pinon never thought it was the swine flu. Avalos died on Sunday and left four children, 7, 3, 1 and a 1-week.

"What we know is that both individuals that passed away had the infection, but they also had other medical conditions that may have caused their death," said Dr. Luis Escobedo, the Department of State Health Services director for West Texas.

The city's Public Health Department held a press conference to address the two deaths and answer questions about why these two relatively young people died of complications.

"People that were younger were not exposed to those related strains of influenza, and therefore they're more vulnerable because they lack immunity. Their level of immunity is much less than older people," said Escobedo.

Health Department officials explained how tests for both victims were conducted upon arrival to the hospitals. But they initially tested negative for influenza. The Health Department became involved and confirmed both cases as swine flu. And now, Avalos' family is trying to cope.

"She's left us, but we have four little angels with us now," said Pinon.

Pinon said no one in his family who came in contact with Avalos suffers from symptoms, but they've been advised to see their doctor if they see the first signs of the flu.

Because both victims died of complications, the cause of their deaths remains under investigation.
