Fire crews were at the scene of a gas line rupture on the 9400 block of Carnegie in east El Paso Tuesday morning.

First units at the scene reported that a construction crew working on a water line using a backhoe accidentally punctured a 4-inch gas line and placed a hazmat condition II on the incident, said spokesman Lt. Mario Hernandez with the fire department.

Firefighters had to evacuate several businesses in the area as a precaution until the gas line was repaired.

About 20 employees were affected by the evacuation. There were injuries reported.

El Paso fire officials want to remind the public to always call the Texas Gas Service before conducting any type of excavation. Whether you’re a resident or a business, always make sure of the location of the gas lines to avoid accidents like this one.
