Foreclosures High In El Paso; But Market Looking Up

Hundreds of foreclosures have been filed in the last few months in El Paso, but the president of the local board of realtors says there's light at the end of the tunnel.

In the last couple of weeks, you can find 400 listings under foreclosures on the El Paso County Web site.

That's a little less than what we saw in the first quarter of the year, which was 600 foreclosures.

KFOX asked the president of the greater El Paso Association of Realtors for her take on the high number of foreclosures. Suzy Shewmaker Hicks said it doesn't have to do with the economy or unemployment, it has to do with bad loans.

"So people have none of their personal money in the game. They started out with a low interest rate, but were issued more money than the house was actually worth on the speculation that value of the house was going to increase," said Shewmaker Hicks.

A foreclosure prevention workshop will take place next week for anyone who is behind on their mortgage payments.

It's happening on Saturday, May 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at El Dorado High School's library. That's at 12401 Edgemere.
