Cheers As Schools Learn They Aren't Closing

Students at three El Paso elementary schools will not close after a decision by El Paso Independent School District superintendent Lorenzo Garcia Monday.

Schuster, Zavala and Houston schools were facing closure after the district announced the schools were not fulfilling enrollment requirements, but Garcia has allowed the schools to try to increase enrollment within two years.

"My teacher told the whole class and we were all excited," said Sabrina Barraza, a Schuster student.

The crowd of parents, students and faculty erupted in cheers when the announcement was made.

"I was happy that they were not closing because I don't want to move because I like Schuster," said Valerie Edwards, a Schuster student.

"One thing for sure there is a lot of community involvement, and teachers and students and parents really want to get involved, but at the end of the day we have to have more enrollments in these schools," Garcia said. "When you get 220 students or 340 students at one school and you have to pay for the principal all the way down to the custodian and the cafeteria worker, it just becomes impossible."

For parents their fears were put to rest. Many of them fearing overcrowded classrooms as students would have been forced to move to larger schools.

“You got more kids in a class, that's less attention for each child and the teachers get overwhelmed," said parent Monica Barraza.

For students, they’re just glad they will get to perform their talent show on their own stage.
