Former Employee: No Kill Shelter Director Sends Dogs To Be Euthanized

It's supposed to be a no kill shelter but KFOX uncovers dogs from Pet Guardian Angel are being euthanized.

KFOX discovered that at least 18 dogs were taken to El Paso Animal Control and signed off to be killed by the director of Pet Guardian Angel, Martha Williams, in recent months.

Tabetha Longnecker joined Pet Guardian Angel a little over a year ago to help save dogs.

"They're great. Every one of them are great," Longnecker told KFOX.

But she said the no-kill shelter wasn't living up to it's name.

"She had taken some dogs down to animal control to have them put down, 17 or 18 dogs is what I understand," Longnecker said about Williams.

"We can't take these animals in and hold them like we used to do. We either have to call Animal Control to pick them up or take them to Animal Control," Williams said in a phone interview on Monday.

Williams said she takes them to Animal Control because she is being evicted from her current location in Far East El Paso.

KFOX was there on February 18 when sheriff's deputies tried to mediate a resolution between Williams and her land owner over the eviction.

"The inhumane thing would be just to turn them loose in the desert. You can't do that and I can't take them in," Williams told KFOX.

Just one day before deputies showed up at Pet Guardian Angel, 18 dogs were brought to Animal Control.

Animal Services confirmed to KFOX they were signed off not as strays but straight for euthanization, never getting a chance to be adopted.

"It's a very horrible thing. Very sad. They're all very special to me," said Longnecker.

In pictures taken Monday by Longnecker, a Pet Guardian Angel employee took in three dogs to Animal Control, labeling them strays. That means they have between three and six days to be adopted, otherwise they are put down.

"It doesn't look good for them. There are so many, so many dogs and I would hope that they get adopted before that," said Longnecker.

A number of people KFOX spoke with on Monday said the woman evicting Williams, Sherleen Hervey, intends to keep the shelter open and has even been willing to take the dogs off of Williams' hands.

KFOX tried contacting Hervey to see if that is true, but she has not returned our calls.

Williams said the dogs are her responsibility and she plans to take them with her when she finally leaves the Far East El Paso location.
