EP District Clerk Overwhelmed With Passport Applications

In just 16 days, you will have to have a passport to get back into the United States from Mexico, and it is because of that new rule that the El Paso County District Clerk's office was nothing short of overwhelmed Saturday with people trying to get their passport processed.

"We've been here since about 7, 7:30 in the morning," said Angela Rios, from Northeast El Paso.

And some waited a lot longer than that.

"We've had people here since 3 in the morning. When I showed up here this morning there was a line literally around the courthouse. It was a lot larger than we anticipated," said El Paso County District Clerk Gilbert Sanchez. "There is a point where we are going to have to just say I'm sorry, you're going to have to come back another day, another Saturday."

Sanchez made that decision moments after speaking to KFOX, turning people away.

"All of the rest of the people that are going to be out here are going to be very upset, because of it," said Lucilla Apodaca from Central El Paso.

For those who were lucky enough to stay in line, they had to battle temperatures in the mid 80s.

Rios stood in line because her family is taking a cruise this summer. She seems to have taken a Zen-like approach to the situation.

"It's understandable, there's nothing they can do about it, first come, first serve, we've been told that," said Rios.

The District Clerk's office has extended it's hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday for the next couple of weeks if you need to get your passport processed.
