EL PASO, Texas -- Fort Bliss Spc. Frank Zimmerman could be dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Army in the next 4-6 weeks after allegedly stomping on the neck of an adult dog named Tinkerbelle and injuring a second dog named Wrigley.KFOX has learned that a recommendation for a discharge will be given to Commanding General Howard Bromberg on Monday. Zimmerman's court martial is expected to take place within 45 days of that notification.KFOX reported in March on the allegations after Wrigley was returned to Pet Guardian Angel with severe injuries including a fractured leg. An employee at PGA told KFOX that the dog had been adopted two weeks earlier by Zimmerman along with Tinkerbelle. The employee said Tinkerbelle had died allegedly at the hands of Zimmerman. When questioned by a KFOX reporter about the injuries, Zimmerman's wife told KFOX her husband had stomped on the dog's neck and killed it.Zimmerman was charged with not following the post's rules about animal cruelty and forced to live in the barracks to await the outcome of the post's investigation. The Zimmerman case comes 15 months after another Fort Bliss soldier was accused of animal cruelty. In February 2008, a local animal rescue group alerted the media to a case involving a dog they dubbed "Little Pit Girl." Jessie Miller with Animal Cruelty Heartline said the dog was left inside a dog crate by Fort Bliss soldier, Dwayne Sumter, in an abandoned off-post house. The dog eventually chewed her way out of the crate but was left without food or water. Her emaciated body was found lying in a suitcase that was left behind in the home.Sumter was charged with animal cruelty by the El Paso District Attorney's Office but within weeks moved from Fort Bliss to Fort Hood as a regularly scheduled transfer. He was then deployed to Iraq with the 20th Support Command. As a result of KFOX's continuous coverage of these cases, Sumter was sent back to El Paso last month to face the Class-A Misdemeanor animal abuse case. A trial date has not yet been set.
