Timberon Wildfire Keeps Residents From Returning

A wildfire in Timberon, New Mexico burns more private land after already destroying homes and other structures.

At zero percent contained Thursday morning, firefighters worked to get it up to 20 percent contained by Thursday evening

“I did go ahead and pack some stuff and got it in the vehicle,” said Ruby Roberts, Timberon resident and evacuee.

Fire is forcing about 20 residents from their homes. It charred 80 acres Wednesday, and another 60 Thursday. Some residents have no home to return to,

“We do have four structures that were destroyed -- three of them completely one structurally. We also lost about 10 vehicles,” said forest service information officer, Darlene Hart.

Roberts’ home still stands, but she and her husband were not allowed to return as small fires burned near. Power was also knocked out in the area. She said her neighbors were reportedly taking their losses rather well.

“They are thankful that nobody has been hurt and that they were able to get their pets and their livestock out,” Roberts said.

Roberts' daughter called from Hobbs to see if her parents were safe. Roberts said her daughter was praying the home would be spared.

“’I've asked God to put the angels around everybody in Timberon and protect everybody,’ and what her Dad said to her was I want you to know that they have all shown up. They are ones that have a shovel in one hand and a fire hose in another,” said Roberts.

At least 100 firefighters from across the state helped with manpower and equipment. Nature is working against them in the extreme fire conditions.

“We have unusually high temps for this time of year very low humidity and our winds are kicking up a little,” Hart said.

Fire officials said the cause is still under investigation.

The forest service said no more structures are threatened, but evacuees are still on standby.
