Sparks Mobile Home Bursts Into Flames

A late-night fire leveled a mobile home in Sparks and posed a threat to neighboring homes Wednesday night.

A Horizon fire official told KFOX firefighters had a tough time knocking down the fire because there weren't any fire hydrants near the home on the 200 block of Notre Dame Lane.

“We brought additional trucks to make sure we had enough water supply,” said Chief Allen Keys from the Horizon Fire Department. It was quite an intense fire, not only for fire crews, but for neighbors.

"I was at the store and when I got here it was in flames,” said Sparks resident, Jesus Rincon.

Rincon lives next to the mobile home that went up in flames. "When I got here you couldn't see anything,” Rincon said.

"We could already see smoke from the fire house,” said Keys. “It was burning before it got called in."

When several Horizon and Socorro fire crews arrived at the scene shortly after 8 p.m., part of the mobile home was burned to the ground. "The front of the roof had already collapsed and just the back structure of the trailer was standing,” Keys added.

Fire officials feared the blaze would spread to neighboring homes -- in particular, Rincons' home, which is just a few feet away. "We thought the flames were going to come to our mobile home and we were scared,” Rincon said.

Rincon said the man living in the home was able to get out safely, but his home is a total loss; all that's left is the frame of a stove and air conditioner.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the home, but as a precaution, Rincon has to make some changes to his morning routine."We had to leave our children with my mom because we don’t have electricity, no utilities. They turned everything off because there’s still a danger.” He and his wife stayed at their home.

The man whose home burned down is staying with relatives, Rincon told KFOX. No residents or firefighters were injured. Fire investigators are still trying to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
