County District Clerk's Office Halts Passport Processing

Posted: 1:31 am MDT May 6, 2009Updated: 11:27 am MDT May 6, 2009

If getting you're passport or passport card is on you're to-do list Wednesday morning, the El Paso County District Clerk’s office has suspended the processing of passports at its office.

The suspension couldn't have come at a worse time. These last couple of days. People who've waited until the last minute to get their passport by the June deadline have literally flooded the District Clerk's office at the County Courthouse.

"I was here yesterday and the line was real big and today it's even worse, it's doubled,” said Fidel Hernandez, of East El Paso.

"They close at eleven and they don't let you in no more and register,” added Patricia Chaparro, a Juarez resident.

With more than 200 people heading out to get their passport at the District Clerk's office, workers had to stop the line hours before the office closed.

"We want to make sure that we do help everybody whose been standing in line, if they're going to stand in line and not even be helped then we rather just send them home,” said Stephanie Damian from the District Clerk’s office.

Beginning Wednesday officials will keep sending applicants home but not because of long lines that wrap around the office. The fear of the seven confirmed cases of H1N1 in the Borderland forced the District Clerk's office to temporarily suspend the passport processing service. That's to hopefully prevent the spread of the flu to employees and all applicants -- especially those with children, since six of the confirmed cases are kids.

"It's a little bit scary with the kids because they're the ones that get sick fast,” added Chaparro.

The passport processing service will be closed Wednesday and will continue to be closed until further notice. They will review their decision to stop the passport service Friday. In order to accommodate those affected by the closure they'll have extended hours once they reopen.
