Coronado High School Students Part Of Unique Agricultural Program

When you think of students at school you often think of kids in a classroom behind a desk, but not some Coronado High School students. They spend some of their day in the middle of an alfalfa field.

That's because the students have planted, watered, cut and are now bailing the alfalfa. They are members of the Future Farmers of American program at Coronado High which has been around since 1968 and is now one of a kind.

"This program offers a lot of hands-on activities and competition that builds up leadership skills and career development skills as well," said Hanah Georges, a Coronado High School Sophomore.

Georges is one of the 199 active FFA members on campus and those who talked to KFOX said the FFA program also teaches them some of life's lessons such as social skills and independence. Who would have thought that learning about how to raise livestock, farming, even operating and maintaining the farm equipment would also build confidence.

"I can get up in front of a crowd of 50,000 people and I can give a speech hands down and not get nervous," said Bailee Robinet, a Coronado High School Senior.

After high school, both Robinet and Georges plan to go to college and become veterinarians. Robinet starts next fall thanks in part to a scholarship she earned through the FFA program.

The students farm 25 acres owned by the El Paso Independent School District. The FFA program at Coronado High School is the only one in the El Paso and Ysleta school districts. It is an unique program with some real benefits.
