Las Cruces police have arrested the parents of two children who tested positive for methamphetamines.

Isaac Alvarez, 30, and Veronica Alvarez, 27, were arrested Thursday after drug test results on their children came back positive.

Police were called to the Coachlight Inn on Motel Boulevard on March 27 when two children, ages 5 and 6, were found locked out of their room. Their parents were not in the room and not at the motel, said Dan Trujillo, a spokesman for the Las Cruces police.

The children were taken to the state’s Children, Youth and Families Department.

The children’s parents were later identified as Isaac and Veronica Alvarez. They were questioned by police, and drug tests were performed on them and their children. The two children tested positive for methamphetamines. Veronica Alvarez tested positive for methamphetamines and amphetamines. Isaac Alvarez tested positive for methamphetamines, amphetamines, codeine, morphine and heroin.

Both parents were charged with two counts each of negligent child abuse. Isaac Alvarez faces one count of trafficking heroin.
