Swine Flu Forces School Competitions To Change

All major high school athletic and academic events have been either cancelled or postponed to past May 11 due to the swine flu outbreak.

The announcement from the University Interscholastic League will mainly effect high school softball, track and academic competitions.

Franklin High junior Andres Estrada will not be heading off to the track regionals in Austin Thursday like he was supposed to because of the announcement.

"We were supposed to take off from our school tomorrow but now we're not going to be able to do our performances that we were training so hard for," Estrada said.

The regional track meet has been canceled and the past district times will be used instead for the state competition.

"It was a big disappointment, because I personally didn’t have a very good district meet,” Estrada said.

So that means no chance for state for Estrada. His coach, Kelly Hady had to break the news to his athletes. Even though Hady understands why it was cancelled he also understands his student’s disappointment.

"I'm sure the experts know what they are doing. I'm sure it's probably worse than we're thinking. They are trying to keep the kids apart from each other. It’s about the safety of the kids, but its bad timing, very bad timing. I just hope it doesn't get worse so we can still continue with the state meet," Hady said.

But the track team isn't the only group feeling the pain.

The decision also affects academic and fine arts competitions. That means Franklin High junior Hayden Pendergrass' current events championship will also be put back. However, Pendergrass doesn't understand why.

"In a UIL academic competition you aren't rubbing up against somebody like say if you're in a basketball game. You're really taking a test or speaking and that's it," Pendergrass said.

Whether on the track or at a desk, it appears the swine flu has changed plans for students of every kind.
