Lower Valley Residents At Odds Over Traffic Control

For almost six months, residents of this neighborhood in the Lower Valley have been at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to how to control traffic on Cinecue Way.

"I would like to see the median closed off so people aren't taking this turn so quickly," said Selina Flores, who lives on Cinecue Way.

Cinecue is only about 0.2 miles long, the street is very narrow, it doesn't have sidewalks and it's about 12 feet wide. Residents said still traffic zooms by here.

"People come down the street and they go fast," said Flores.

The city's developmental services temporarily closed the median on Yarbrough that leads traffic to Cinecue Way for 45 days to study traffic patterns. At this time, the department is not recommending the permanent closure of the median. But during the closure, residents living in nearby streets didn't like the change.

"Nothing was straightened out, it just redirected the problem to another neighborhood," said Richard Vasquez, who lives on Starr Avenue.

"The people that live on Starr, they want it open because it's more of a convenience for them to go down this street than go around," said Flores.

One issue that came up if the closure took place is the route first responders would have to take.

"EMS and the fire department have to take a longer route to reach this area," said Vasquez.
