Thefts Plague East El Paso Fitness Gyms, Police Say

El Paso Police say thefts are plaguing eastside gyms. Gym thefts are happening inside the gym and in the parking lots. El Paso police say not all gyms are cooperating with their efforts to prevent these crime.

"You just want to come over here and work out, relief some stress for most of us. It's a stress reliever. It kind of makes you think," said Carlos Villalpando from east El Paso.

Villalpando comes to the EP Fitness on James Watt and said he's never been a victim of a theft at this location but thinks he should be more careful. El Paso police said through the beginning of April they've had 37 thefts at east El Paso gyms this year. They vary from thefts from lockers to thefts of vehicles with keys stolen from lockers.

"People come and leave their guard down because they're in there doing their little work outs and they leave their stuff in their truck or in the locker and they get taken," said Miguel Duran from East El Paso.

Police said they've been working with gyms to prevent this crime but they said EP Fitness has refused to provide police with surveillance video that could be crucial in identifying the people responsible.

KFOX contacted EP Fitness management and part of their statement reads: "We have worked diligently with EPPD surveillance programs. Statements in a recent press release are unfounded and disappointing. Our video surveillance recordings are stored on servers and are not immediately available to distribute to officers on a minute's notice."

But before these crimes are solved, customers like Villalpando said he's taking extra precaution.

"It makes you think about it. I'll probably leave my cell phone and just take my keys in there and just hold on to them," said Villalpando.

Police urge gym patrons not to leave valuables in lockers provided by the gyms. If possible, take your ID and keys with you and leave everything else at home or in a secure location.
