Coronado Motel Issued Order To Vacate

About 50 people staying at the Coronado Motel in West El Paso have been asked to find somewhere else to go.

James Teano didn't know he had to leave the Coronado Motel by Wednesday. He had planned to stay for a month.

"This is my second night and I'm happy with it," said Teano.

In fact, he was surprised to find out about all the safety violations at the motel.

"How does the room look, any problems?" asked a KFOX reporter. "Nothing. I'm happy with it," Teano replied.

El Paso building inspectors and the Fire Marshal's office conducted inspections at the Coronado Motel near North Mesa Street and Executive Center and found elements that pose a safety hazard for occupants.

"Found several violations that we thought were a life safety hazard for the occupants of that motel and they issued an order to vacate the premises effective immediately," said Lt. Mario Hernandez with the El Paso Fire Marshal's Office.

The marshal's office found the fire alarm system at the hotel doesn't work and the smoke detectors in the rooms don't operate. Building inspectors found plumbing and electrical work that's not compliant and other repair work that violates the building code. The marshal's office issued an order to vacate.

"Some of these violations are serious enough, if there was a fire in that motel we would have a large number of fatalities," said Hernandez.

Occupants like Teano are going to have to quickly find a place to sleep before Wednesday ends.

"I have nothing planned. Whatever happens happens," said Teano.

The property owners will be given time to bring everything to compliance if they want to continue operating.
