Sierra Vista Teacher Claims Contracted Scabies At School

An elementary school teacher in the Socorro Independent School District said she quit her job because she claims she was infected with scabies at her school. Now she wonders how many more people may be infected and are not coming forward.

"It started in December and it started on my neck. It started as a trail of red spots on my neck," said a Sierra Vista Elementary School teacher who didn't want to be identified because she said she feels embarrassed that she was infected with scabies.

She said she started to get treated for scabies since January. The drugs prescribed included a cream, an antibiotic and a steroid used for the treatment of scabies. Scabies is a contagious skin infection caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin and cause severe itching. Health Department officials said scabies are spread by direct skin-to-skin or close bodily contact, and by pets and some farm animals.

As KFOX reported, there's been more than 50 cases reported throughout schools in the El Paso area and only one case at Horizon Heights, a SISD school. But this teacher believes there may be more especially at Sierra Vista where she worked.

"Do you work in a school environment? And I said yes. He said more than likely that's where you picked it up because that's where it exposes itself," said the teacher.

She said she notified the district's Human Resource department and asked for a transfer. When she found out she had to apply for a position at other school and she had to wait, she decided to resign.

"I thought there's no way I could go back. I didn't want to go through this suffering again. It went on too long, too many weeks of suffering," she said.

She said the district seem uninterested in her situation and believes more students could be infected.

SISD officials released this statement regarding the teacher's allegations.

"Socorro ISD has not received a doctor's statement from any employee regarding scabies during the course of the past several months. We also do not have any documented record at the campus or district level of any employee or student at Sierra Vista Elementary School having been diagnosed with scabies."
