EL PASO, Texas -- Nadya Suleman, who was dubbed the “octomom” after giving birth to eight children in January, has been making headlines ever since. The 33-year-old single mom who already had six other kids is getting ready to move into a 2,500 square foot home her father bought in La Habra, Calif.Suleman, who appeared on the Dr. Phil show Wednesday, has accepted an invitation from Angels In Waiting, a nonprofit group that will provide around-the-clock care once the babies come home in the next few weeks. It will take 14 nurses a day, four to five at a time, to get the job done.“The norm is that they spend weeks or months in neonatal intensive care unit,” said Dr. Jose Gonzalez, a Texas Tech University specialist on maternal-fetal medicine, or high-risk pregnancies.Gonzalez said it’s a miracle all eight babies are still alive, and that Suleman didn’t suffer any major complications. He said a significant number of premature babies have developmental and behavioral problems, and some cases include abnormalities.“They can have problems with their brain, blindness, deafness, and problems with their intestines,” said Gonzalez.According to Gonzalez, over the past 20 years, the number of single births has increased 11 percent in the U.S. The number of twin births has jumped 75 percent, and triplet births and beyond have spike 400 percent thanks to assisted reproductive technology such as invitro and other medications.“Once you pass three, it becomes a real problem because you're going to end up with all sorts of pregnancy complications. These patients are at risk for diabetes, hypertension, infections, operative deliveries such as cesarean,” said Gonzalez. The only thing that’s for sure in multiple birth pregnancies is that the babies will be delivered prematurely.Despite what happened in the “octomom” case, Gonzalez said assisted reproductive technologies are safe. He doesn't recommend having more than one or two babies at a time.Let us know your thoughts on the octomom case, just comment below this story.
