EL PASO, Texas -- Scabies cases continue to spread through the Ysleta School District. The El Paso Health Department has now stepped in to educate staff and students about the rash. But KFOX has learned about another scabies case in another school district.Mario Batiz's son goes to Horizon Heights Elementary and he just found out a case of a student with scabies was confirmed last month.Scabies is an itchy skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into your skin. It looks like a pimply rash and it requires close contact in order for it to spread. Socorro School District officials said the case was confirmed on Feb. 18 and the El Paso Health Department was notified. District officials said the health department informed them it was not necessary to contact parents because it was an isolated case. SISD officials checked all the students for scabies. They also said they didn't notify parents because the didn't want to alarm them when it was only an isolated case. But one pediatrician says the rash is contagious and other students may have it."If there's one case in the school that's been diagnosed there's probably a few others that haven't been diagnosed. It's out there," said Dr. Jose Prieto.Prieto said the condition is common and parents need to be on the look out for it. There's been several cases confirmed in a handful of Ysleta ISD schools.YISD officials just found out about two more student cases at Cedar Grove Elementary. This week, there were 16 cases at Ascarate Elementary which include teachers. Riverside Middle has three confirmed cases, Parkland Middle has one case and Riverside High has two confirmed cases."The chances are good that it's going to be spread around. I think parents, especially right now with this slow epidemic that we're having should be on the lookout for it and pay closer attention to some of these pimply rashes the kids may come home with," said Prieto.
