Clubs Lose Thousands In Power Outage

During the most popular and busiest party night, El Paso bars and clubs were literally left in the dark after a power outage affected tens of thousands of customers across El Paso.

It put several clubs, including Club 101 and Wet Ultra Lounge, out of thousands of dollars.

"The customers thought that we're the ones who shut down the power. You started hearing people saying 'Oooo,'" said Juan Rodriguez, general manager of Club 101.

At about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the emergency lights turned on inside Club 101, and the Saturday night party was over.

"Once I went out and saw the whole block blacked out, I knew it was a power outage. So, that's when I told my bouncers, 'We need to start walking people out,'" said Rodriguez.

While the crowd of 800 walked out, so did the money waiting to be made. Rodriguez said the power outage happened during the busiest part of the night, when the bar makes its biggest sales.

"Usually when we run tabs, we run whatever they order," said Rodriguez as he pointed to the computerized cash register.

"The whole computer system went down. So, we couldn't print out those receipts for the customers to sign for their credit cards," said Rodriguez. The business had to pay out of pocket about $1,500 in credit card sales that weren't processed.

Rodriguez said the club lost out on $8,000 in future sales because it closed an hour and a half early. Sunday afternoon, Rodriguez and patrons were still wondering what caused the outage.

According to El Paso Electric spokeswoman Teresa Souza, the citywide power outage was caused by a vehicle that ran into a transmission pole at the intersection of Socorro Road and Salamanca Lane.

Souza explained the transmission line feeds electricity to distribution lines, which provide power to neighborhoods across El Paso County. Souza said about 100,000 customers were affected in isolated areas stretching from the Lower Valley to Santa Teresa.

El Paso police said the crash happened shortly after midnight. The man and woman in the vehicle were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials did not say what caused the crash.

Power in the Sun City was restored by 3 a.m.
