Craig Pieri Sentenced To 90 Years For Sexual Abuse Of A Child

A Las Cruces man facing nearly 250 years in prison for sexually abusing a relative learns his sentence Monday afternoon.

Jurors found Craig Pieri guilty in December and Monday he learned he would spend 90 years in prison.

Pieri, 44, first stood trial in 2007 but the mistrial was declared.

Then in a re-trial this past December, the jury found him guilty of 20 counts including criminal sexual penetration of a child under 13, criminal sexual contact, kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

“I have never been in this situation where I had someone who has been convicted of this many crimes,” said Jeffrey Jones, Pieri’s attorney

Jones asked the judge to consider his clients apologies and said a lot had happened since a witness came forward with allegations against his client.

“I think it is a real tragic situation of what happened in this four year period. A lot of lives were ruined in this case,” Jones said.

When given a chance to speak on his own behalf Pieri was a man of few words

“I think Mr. Jones has pretty much covered everything i wanted to say,” Pieri said.

The state said there is too much at stake to lessen Pieri's sentence.

“I know Mr. Pieri faces a huge sentence in this case, and I think a huge sentence is exactly what's appropriate. I would ask the court to run all the counts consecutively and impose the entire maximum sentence,” said Susan Riedel, chief deputy district attorney.

Judge Stephen Bridgeforth ran several counts together giving Pieri 90 years behind bars.

Jones said his client believed he was innocent, and said without physical evidence and injuries to the child, his client doesn't believe he didn’t win his trial.

“It's hard for him to understand how he didn't succeed in this case,” Jones said.

Riedel said an evaluation showed Pieri didn’t feel like social norms applied to him.

“The over 20 years I’ve been doing this now, I don't think I've seen anybody diagnosed with a more horrifying manner. He is just full of danger,” Riedel said.

Pieri's wife was sentenced to just-under four years for not reporting the abuse. She was reportedly present when the abuse occurred in 2005 on a converted bus that travelled cross country.
