Blessed Sacrament School Will Close At End Of Year

Parents at Blessed Sacrament school in Northeast El Paso are concerned their school will be closed at the end of the year after getting a letter about a meeting scheduled for Friday night.

El Paso’s Bishop, Armando Ochoa, met with parents to discuss what will happen.

Friday afternoon, parents were worried they would have to tell their kids they'd be going to a new school next year.

After years of hearing that the school could be closed because Father Stephen Peters didn't want the hassle of running it, The bishop said it was true.

“From my understanding it's something Father Peters has wanted for a long time and it seems like he is just getting his wish,” Parent Veronica Terrill said.

She has been involved with the school for years and said closing it would be a shame.

“I'm the cheerleading coach. My husband is the basketball coach. There is a lot of people like me. We are so involved with our kids we would miss that,” Terrill said.

Some families said they were coming from New Mexico to have their kids attend, and now they feel they have to find another El Paso school.

“This is my brother we have to find him a new school we wont send him to New Mexico. This one is mine. There's no way we're going to send him to New Mexico,” said Nanette Dugger of Chaparral.

Many are upset they couldn't get answers from the school, even though they heard the rumors before the letter was sent home about the meeting Friday night.

“We don't think it's right we want our school here,” Dugger said.

They're more upset that it has nothing to do with funding.

“We're in the black. If we were in the red I could understand that, but we are not. I think it's more of him not wanting him to have the church and part of the school being part of it,” Terrill said.

Parents say they heard rumors from some board members, and they realized it was about to be announced because all the schools fundraisers had stopped.

Many parents ended up walking out because none of their questions were being answered.
