El Paso Child Support Payments Slow In Tough Economy

Kids may be cute, but they are not cheap. Just ask Ismael Hurtado, the father of two girls. He pays more than $200 a month in child support.

"It's working out pretty good,” said Hurtado. “So I'm able to pay off what I need to pay."

But while he has a job to make his child support payments some parents don't. They are losing their jobs, but still have to pay.

The El Paso County Domestic Relations Office said the office is starting to see parents who said are unable to pay child support because of loss of work.

"Some of our obligors or child support payers are reporting that they are receiving unemployment," said Ouisa Davis, an attorney with the office.

The domestic relations office said even if hours are cut or parents lose a job, it's not an excuse the court wants to hear.

"Even if you don't pay all of it, if you're unemployed and you have some source of money available to you, pay something every month," said Davis.

Hurtado said he knows how tough it can be.

“Well I've been in that situation before and the employment ran off. You have to look for other resources of payment,” Hurtado said.

So to parents out there who owe child support and are facing a tough financial time, he has this advise.

"Don't give up. Don't give up and keep doing what you're doing. There's something out there," he said.
