Local Band's Win Gives El Paso Boost

A hard rock band with local members beat out Motley Crue and Judas Priest for a Grammy.

It's a moment every music band dreams of. After eight years in the music scene, The Mars Volta, wins the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. The band was started by two El Pasoans, Omar Rodriguez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

"It's the style of music I listen to. It's the look," said Vicki Estrada, a fan of the band.

Estrada also works at Dr. Angel Rodriguez's office, the father of guitarist Omar Rodriguez.

"I thought it was great because he's always so excited about his son. He's always promoting his son. He made photo copies of the Rolling Stones magazine his son's on and puts it around the work place," said Estrada.

"They beat out Disturbed, Judas Priest, Motley Crue and Rob Zombie and those are just huge names in the industry," said George Reynoso, music historian and the owner of All That Music in East El Paso.

Reynoso said when local band members do well it's a great boost for the community.

"Not just for The Mars Volta but for our community. Just to dispel or begin to dispel these perceptions of El Paso of some backward bordertown in far West Texas," said Reynoso.

Estrada hopes that boost will spread to other local talent.

"It's good for the local bands. They can really be inspired by this young gentleman and Mars Volta," said Estrada.
