Ramos And Compean Will Be Released From Prison

President George W. Bush has commuted the sentences of former Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. KFOX has learned that both men will have their freedom once again on March 20.

Joe Loya, Ignacio Ramos' father-in-law, doesn't mind answering all of the calls he has gotten in his office on Monday. The phone has been ringing off the hook with people offering congratulations.

"These are all phone calls from all over the nation, it's just unbelievable the support that we have all over America," said Loya.

Others wanted responses to the president's commutation.

"I got a call from 'Hannity & Colmes,' I gotta a call from a bunch of radio stations all over the nation already, television stations, the Associated Press and all," he said.

While he is working hard on Monday to get to everyone's calls, there is a clear sense of relief on Loya's face. Loya also looks like a tired man, a man who just went 12 rounds fighting the federal government.

"Oh man, it's unbelievable. If you guys only knew what we've been through over the last four years, you know? Fighting the government is not an easy task," Loya told KFOX.

But for Loya, that fight is finally over.

"I was just speechless you know, I'm just so excited. It's been a very, very difficult four years, it's been a nightmare now for four years, and it finally comes to a close," he said.

U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes did release a statement to KFOX saying the president made the right decision in commuting the former agents' sentences.

Ramos and Compean were not pardoned, their sentences were commuted. What that means is that the two have served their prison terms, but are still considered convicted felons.
