EL PASO, Texas -- A trailer home in Northeast El Paso went up in flames Tuesday sending a mother and three young children scrambling to escape."It was a whole bunch of fire and then I saw it was huge,” neighbor Bianca Gutierrez said.Gutierrez lives just a few trailers over from the one that burned to the ground."I started hearing people screaming,” Gutierrez said.Although the fire is still under investigation, the mother who lived in the burned trailer told KFOX she was cleaning her stove when a spot of grease caught fire then quickly spread. The mother, suffering from burns to her leg, grabbed her children, escaped and called 911 quickly. That quick call may have stopped the fire from spreading to other nearby homes."They're very close to each other, so it's easy for one trailer to catch fire and to spread to another one," Gutierrez said.“The [woman] did the right thing,” Chief James Carvalho, of the El Paso Fire Department, said. “She got her children out and exited the trailer and called 911, that’s the most important thing you can do, not try to fight it yourself."Because of the quick call for help only one family is without a home instead of an entire neighborhood. Now those neighbors who were spared will try to help a family get back on their feet."I feel awful. I would like to help them, because if I put myself in their shoes, I would feel awful," Gutierrez said. If the fire is confirmed as grease-related, it would be the second in a little more than a week. A Whataburger restaurant in West El Paso was heavily damaged by fire on Dec. 30.
