Fire Destroys Toy Shop Days Before Christmas

More than 35 firefighters respond to a strip mall fire Sunday night in east El Paso.

Someone saw smoke coming from the RC and Me hobby store on the 12100 block of Montwood Drive around 7:15 p.m. and called 911.

The store is a part of the Montwood Crossing shopping center.

Firefighters evacuated restaurants and stores as other fire crews went into the roof and attic area to make sure the fire didn't spread.

Those who own and work in the shops showed up to assess the damage.

"I think we will be fine. I feel really bad for RC and Me; they have a bunch of stuff in there," said Nancy Mestas, a SuperCuts employee. "They have a lot of toys. It's a Radio Shack with more gadgets for little kids."

Fire investigators report a space heater accidentally left on after closing caused the fire.

Damage is estimated at more than $350,000.

No one was hurt in the fire.
