County Awards Bid To Begin Health Clinic

On Monday County Commissioners voted to create a health clinic for county employees. The health clinic is going to be just a block away from the county courthouse, making convenient for employees, but the county also hopes it will be a money saver.

Almost everyone has shown up to work sick. Chris Marin said he's pushed himself until he can't perform anymore.

"If someone is feeling sick or whatever they can go to that clinic and get reviewed by an actual nurse or doctor," said Marin.

In the near future county employees, who work at the courthouse downtown, will have a clinic just around the corner from their work. County Commissioner Veronica Escobar said it should bring health costs down.

"To limit the number of people going to the ER. That's where our cost is going when they go to the hospital. How do we prevent that?" said Escobar.

By making a health clinic available within walking distance from work for thousands of El Pasoans, Escobar said it can reduce cost and absenteeism.

"They tell their supervisor. 'I'm not feeling well. I'm going down stairs and getting checked out'. And it can be a 10-minute deal as opposed to taking the morning off and waiting for a doctor, waiting for two hours," said Escobar.

Marin believes a clinic close to work would benefit him.

"It would be wise to go there now, if they have it," said Marin.

Operating cost for the health clinic would be $700,000 a year. It's expected to be up and running in 90 days.
