Early-Morning Motorcycle Crash Kills El Paso Man

Every morning, Vanessa Monarez would hear her phone ring and know it was her dad.

"He'd call me everyday at 8 in the morning to wake me up," Monarez said.

Sunday morning, however, her father, Daniel Monarez, did not call.

Instead, Vanessa was woken up by a knock on her door.

"I was asleep and my cousin went to my house at 2 in the morning saying that my dad had gotten into an accident," Monarez said.

Monarez learned that her father had been riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle near Socorro Road and Sighn Street with his girlfriend of two years on the back.

Daniel Monarez lost control of his bike and went off the road.

"I'm asking to take me to the hospital so I can see him, and my aunt had to let it all out and say he didn't make it,” Monarez said.

Daniel Monarez’s girlfriend was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Although toxicology results are not back, family members believe alcohol was a factor.

"He would still be with us today if alcohol wasn't a factor, but it was, sad to say,” Vanessa Monarez said. “If not, he would be with us right now."

Carlos De La Cruz rode his bike with Daniel Monarez.

"He was there for everybody, you know,” De La Cruz said. “He was a good person. He had a good heart.”

For bikers, it is a tragic reminder.

"Wear a helmet, no drinking, no driving, no speeding," Monarez said.

It is advice she wishes her dad would have taken.

Now, without him, her mornings are going be a little less bright.

"I'm not going to get that phone call anymore," said Monarez.
