Injured Army Soldier Comes To Terms With Walking With Prosthetics

An El Paso soldier injured in Iraq is going through his final months in the Army and rehabilitation.

KFOX has followed the story of Adrian Garcia since he lost both his legs in March of 2007.

In January, Adrian Garcia is expecting to be discharged from the Army. While he is ready to come home from rehab, he's accepting what he knows he will be capable of when he gets there.

Getting a four-day pass from the Army, Garcia made the most with family this Thanksgiving.

“I think the last time I came home was in the summer. Since then, I’ve gotten stronger and I've gotten better. I’ve gotten to know the process of getting out and I have gotten to know my benefits and helping others as well,” Garcia said.

When Garcia first learned he would be able to walk with prosthetics he had high expectations.

“I guess when I got injured I didn't know what to expect as far as walking. I knew I was going to be able to, but now that I'm getting out I'm walking more on my prosthetic legs. I know what my boundaries are,” Garcia said.

“Before, he was really hoping to use his prosthetics, but now we know that that's going to be not impossible, but that's not going to happen like he'll be able to put his legs on and go on,” said Adrian’s Mother Lourdes.

“I wouldn't say it's painful, but it's very tiring. It’s not walking anymore, walking is so casual now. It's a workout and it's hard for me to be in nice clothes at the mall or something and I will be dripping sweat,” said Garcia.

He said he's not disappointed, but he sees reality coming around full circle.

Garcia said right now putting on the prosthetic legs are second nature, like tying a shoe, but on most days it just won’t be ideal to put them on around for use around the house.
