Fire Leaves Family Homeless For The Thanksgiving Holiday

A Dona Ana County family is thankful to have each other this thanksgiving, but that is all they have left.

An electrical fire made their home unlivable, and now they are running out of options.

“It's been about two weeks since Marlene Sandoval's home caught fire, and after a few days in a hotel, her car is looking more and more like home.

At 15 years old, Fabian Escalera is the man of the house, but when an electrical problem caused the house to catch on fire. his worries increased.

“I'm not worried about myself I'm just worried about my sister. She is like my life right there. I worry about her constantly,” said Fabian Escalera.

“My 4-year-old daughter is the one that it's hard to explain it to. My son, he basically knows what is going on. It's hard for him because he hasn't been able to go to school because I don't have the money for gas to be bringing him back and forth,” said Marlene Sandoval.

Sandoval said it is tough to tell her kids where they will be next. For now their car is what they currently know as home.

“Its hard, because I had to load everything up that I'm going to take with me and load it and unload it,” said Sandoval.

The community has helped but supplies run out and so does time.

“I was worried about where are we going to stay what are we going to eat where are we going to go I didn't know if anyone was going to help us,” Escalera said.

And to make matters worse, Sandoval’s paychecks are late.

“I have no money. I'm working but they're late on my check. I haven't received a check for like a month already. It's been hard,” said Sandoval.

The red cross did help out with gift cards and this month already, it has helped five other families who have also lost homes to fires. They anticipate needing more donations too.

“Unfortunately it starts with Thanksgiving and usually we always have a fire over thanksgiving so we are getting prepared for that,” said Frank Hielsher of the Southern New Mexico Chapter of the Red Cross.

If you'd like to help the family and the Red Cross, you can donate money or items, like clothes and blankets. They also ask for teddy bears to help comfort children. You can contact the Red Cross at (575) 526.2631.
