Gas Prices Low But Taxi Drivers Still Struggle

One business hurt by the increasing gas prices was the taxi cab business, but now that gas prices are plummeting it could be a change of gears for cab drivers.

Some taxi cab drivers KFOX talked to said they're still waiting for business to pick up.

Juan Amendola said the taxi cab business is lousy these days even with gas prices plummeting.

"Right now the gas is dropping a little bit, but it's still hard. It's hard to pay for the gas and pay for the companies," said Amendola.

He said the problem he sees now is that the state of the economy is hitting people in the pocketbook and some can't afford to take a taxi.

"It's hard to make money for the company, it's pretty hard. You have to put at least 12 hours of work to make a decent living," said Amendola.

He said he doesn't know what to expect anymore. At the El Paso International Airport, business was expected to pick up on the day before Thanksgiving, the busiest traveling day of the year, but instead ...

"I started at 2 o'clock and this is going to be my first trip," said Amendola.

Two hours later Amendola finally picked someone up. He said it's a trickle effect; when the airport isn't busy, they don't make any money.

"But right now it's not moving. It's real slow," said Amendola.
