Lower Gas Prices May Mean More Holiday Traffic

On the eve of Thanksgiving Raymond Coryle, Jr. waits in line to fill up his gas tank. He has a long trip ahead of him.

"I'm headed to Houston," Coryle said.

It is ten hour trip all in an effort to be with his family.

Coryle is not the only one hitting the road to be with family.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend traffic across the country will more than double. That means increased congestion on streets and highways.

Traffic may increase this year with gas prices now below two dollars a gallon.

With the drop, thousands more may decide to drive home for the holidays.

"I would not have tried it earlier this year, or in the middle of this year with the way fuel prices were,” Coryle said.

For El Paso resident Justin Rios, lower gas prices mean he can be with his family in Ruidoso on Thanksgiving.

If prices had not dropped, it would have been a different story.

“I probably wouldn't even make the trip,” Rios said. “I might have to cancel [the trip] for the holidays, but I'm glad it has gone back down."

For Raymond Coryle, the trip is worth it, but it was a balance between his wallet and his family.

“I just think that gas prices are constantly in the back of everybody's mind,” he said.
