Charitable Jackpot Promises $475,000

KFOX photographer Rudy Reyes opened up his mailbox to find a letter inside.

"I saw this envelope that was kind of strange. It had no returning address," said Reyes.

Inside, were a check from CarMax, a company that helps people buy used cars, for $4,600, and a letter saying he had won $475,000 in a charitable jackpot.

"So I said, 'Wow.' But why would they send me a check if I never even bought a car?" he said.

Reyes thought it was a scam. The check was from CarMax, but the letter was from S S Financial Inc., and it said to call a number to activate the check.

KFOX dialed the number close to a dozen times before getting through to an answering machine that was full. The area code on the answering machine message was 779. That is in Vancouver, British Columbia.

"I thought, man this is too good to be true, and it's gotta be a scam," said Reyes.

CarMax officials said it is not a valid check, and if anyone receives it, they should report it to the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Reyes worries that with the holidays around the corner, El Pasoans are in need of money and fast.

"The fact that we can't even get through, and it's a busy line that we heard, I said, 'Wow, these people are really falling for it,' because they are calling it, and they're calling it and they're jamming the phone lines," he said.

KFOX couldn't find any contact information for S S Financial Inc. located in Dallas, Texas, as stated in the letter.

The Better Business Bureau said if you have any questions about a company, to check them out with the BBB.
