More People Seek Shelter From Cold

The Rescue Mission has stayed busy over the past few weeks, and as the temperature continues to dip Thursday night, the staff expects more homeless people to seek shelter.

Shelly Byrd and her family have been calling the shelter home. They’re from Arizona, but after she was laid off, she packed her bags and headed to El Paso.

“I've been here about a month and a half. If it wasn't for this place, I'd be out in the cold," said Byrd.

The temperature in El Paso is forecasted to dip to 31 degrees, but the wind chill will make it feel like it’s in the teens.

The Byrd family considers itself lucky it has a place to stay warm.

“(I would be) miserable and cold. I wouldn't know what to do,” said Byrd.

“In the summer we had maybe 50 people, and right now we have maybe 80, 90 people,” said Bobby Israel, who works at the front desk of the Rescue Mission. The shelter expects 20 more people within the next week, if not more. While it tries to help everyone, Israel said supplies such as blankets tend to run low, and the shelter tends to get crowded.

“We are getting a lot of people with medical needs, and now we have a lack of bottom bunks because sometimes we have people that can’t make it up to the top bunk,” said Israel.
