EL PASO, Texas -- He’s in danger because of his words. Carlos Spector is the attorney trying to help Emilio Gutierrez Soto, but he believes his client has been in harms’ way.

"He believes his life is in danger by the Mexican military," said Spector.

For the past five months, Spector has been trying to get his client political asylum in the United States. Gutierrez Soto was a journalist for El Diario in Chihuahua.

Right now he's in a detention center in El Paso. He wrote some articles that he believes Mexican officials didn’t like.

"I think their motive was me reporting on the executions and killings committed by the Mexican authorities," Gutierrez Soto told KFOX in July when we first covered his story.

Since KFOX first covered his story, there has been progress and setbacks. Gutierrez Soto was concerned about his son, whom he was separated from when he applied for asylum.

"Mr. Gutierrez's son, his 15-year-old son, is currently being taken care of by his family here in El Paso, Texas," said Spector.

There's no doubt Mexico is dangerous for journalist. Just last week, Juarez reporter Armando Rodriguez ,who wrote also for El Diario, was killed. Rodriguez's stories about police often made the front page of the newspaper. Some say he was targeted.

"It indicates how violent and dangerous it is to be a journalist in present-day Mexico," said Spector.

Still there's a lot of road ahead before his client will be free. Political asylum hearings that were scheduled in November have been pushed back to next March. Until then, his client waits.

"Mr. Gutierrez Soto is of course very depressed and very anxious to have the ability and the right to talk to an immigration judge," Spector said.
