Milk Program Discontinued At Berino Elementary

A parent outreach program in the Gadsden Independent School District is going through some changes that are leaving some needy parents without.

“It's really bad because what are the going to do with this milk. The children really need this milk,” said Josefa Marchado of Berino, a recipient of the food and milk.

Marchado said she would get about 20 small cartons a week and other foods for three kids, and has been receiving the food for a few years.

“When there is a big family like I have, it helps a lot,” said Marchado.

GISD officials said it was investigating the program to see why the food and milk was being distributed against the district’s knowledge, and that perhaps those working with the program were unaware they were not supposed to give away the items.

“We knew that they had to be thrown away this morning,” said the parent volunteer.

She said the Parent Center helps seven families but when school is out, the number jumps to nearly 25.

The parent volunteer said he felt bad because they are not able to help families anymore because of the regulations.

She said more than 100 bananas were thrown away Monday, and if you asked some of the needy parents, they would all sign a waver to receive these foods to leave no fault with the district rather than throwing the food away.

The district said it's will continue an investigation because it doesn't want to lose federal dollars and grant money to run these breakfast and lunch programs.
