Sheriff's deputies arrested a local martial arts instructor on suspicion of possession of marijuana and assault on a public servant.

Darrell Lewis, 25, bonded out after he was arrested by sheriff's deputies.

On Tuesday, Lewis was pulled over on Interstate 10 near the Zaragosa overpass. Sheriff's officials said Lewis was acting nervous and suspicious and he was asked to step out of his vehicle. Officials say Lewis suddenly assaulted the deputy then he tried to run on foot. After the deputy caught up to him and placed him in custody, the deputy found 58 pounds of marijuana hidden in duffle bags on the back seat.

"I'm still in total shock. We weren't expecting this," said Jorge Chacon, a Karate instructor.

Chacon said Lewis used to work with him. But he asked us not to say or show the facility so not to disappoint the students he used to work with.

"He wasn't working here no more but he would come and visit sometimes. He would say hi to kids," said Chacon.

Sheriff's officials said Lewis has been arrested multiple times on suspicion of possession of marijuana. Officials said despite his criminal and violent history, he continues to work with children. Chacon said he's not welcomed back at the facility.

"As instructors, we tell the kids stay away from bad things. We tell the kids to be good in school, be good at home and be good here," said Chacon.

Lewis was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a $35,000 bond. Currently, he is out on bond.
