Neighbors Say Strip Mall Is An Eyesore

At The Outlet Store on Dyer and Broaddus, managers said business is good, but they know how it could get better-- if The El Paso Discount Mall reopens.

“Oh, it will bring more people into the area, most definitely,” said Pedro Rameriz, manager of The Outlet Store.

The El Paso Discount Mall is across the street from the furniture store. The mall is locked and boarded up. It’s been closed for about a year now and neighbors say that’s long enough.

"It's a big building going to waste,” said Anthony Ballou, who lives near the mall in Northeast El Paso. “They don't need to let a good building go to waste.”

The plan was to build military housing but the owners of the mall, River Oaks Properties, said that the developer buying the mall couldn’t get financing. River Oaks Properties president Adam Frank said the deal fell through with in the last 30 to 60 days. Frank said his company is planning on redeveloping the mall as a shopping destination.

”At night you can see the people, the homeless,” said Rameriz. “They’re over there, they’re trying to find a place to sleep.”

But while some have their complaints, others say its no big deal.

“We’ll a lot of people say it’s an eyesore,” said Fernando Guarnero, who works at Rubin’s Barber Shop, near the mall. “You know I guess you could say it is an eyesore, but it doesn’t really bother me.
