An abandoned horse gets a second chance at life after he's found near death in the desert.

We often hear how cats and dogs are taken in at El Paso Animal Services but veterinarians tell KFOX they also help stabilize farm and exotic animals.

As KFOX reported, about two months ago El Paso Animal Services asked for the communities help finding a home for 25-year-old Ace.

"He was in really poor shape. Really underweight, extremely sore, Dr. Garza, he gave him a really low chance of making it,” said Dr. Alvaro Medina, a veterinarian at El Paso Animal Services.

Veterinarians believe Ace was abandoned in the desert for a month, dehydrated, with foot problems and abdominal pain.

"And if he was going to recover it was going to take between 8 months and one year,” said Medina.

When Ace was found he was barely able to walk, but with the help of veterinarians like Dr. Medina and his new caretaker, Marianne Baley he's now looking at life through different eyes and running once again.

"He has perfect manners. He is the sweetest, sweetest horse I have no idea why he was abandoned,” said Baley.

Baley takes in horses and other animals though right now she says it's too difficult to take in more.

“Donations are down for us about 60 percent, so my husband has to work a lot so he can pay for everything,” Baley said.

As the economy worsens there are only more animals in need.

"People are moving they can't take their horses, they're losing their houses and the horses have no where to go,” said Baley.

“We find a lot but I think we miss a lot of them also unfortunately. If a citizen doesn't see the stray animals then there's no way for us to find them,” Medina said.
