Pet Owners Get Ready For The Cold

Posted: 4:53 pm MST November 7, 2008Updated: 6:46 pm MST November 7, 2008

The colder temperatures may have you bundling up, but what about your four-legged friends?

You can almost call the Animal Rescue League Shelter in Canutillo a dog's paradise. The dogs are fed twice a day, they have air-conditioning and heating systems, plus they get a fresh blanket every night.

"Just put yourself outside and it's 20 degrees, and think how cold it is to you. Well, dogs that don't have the right kind of hair, or undercoat, they also experience that cold too," said director Loretta Hyde.

Hyde suggests keeping your four-legged friends indoors during the winter. But if they have to stay outdoors, make sure they have an igloo-type home. The insulation is better than the typical dog house. Also, shredded newspaper or straw will also help keep your pet warm at night. After all, you don't want your dog ending up with frostbite.

"They have heat lamps that they use for livestock. If you can fix it to where you don't have to worry about fire or anything like that, they disperse the heat, and it's a viable way to keep your animal warm," said Hyde. It's also a good idea to put on a sweater on the smaller dogs, even during morning walks.

With more than 200 dogs and cats to look out for, Hyde said times are getting rough. Adoptions are down 40 percent, and donations have dropped 50 percent since last year. She said expenses such as food and veterinarian care has gone up.

Luckily, Friday someone stopped by to donate blankets and money.

"The weather's getting cold, and we feel so sorry for the animals that sometimes have to stay outside," said Jane Bonilla.

Animal Rescue League is a no-kill shelter. Hyde said she's had to turn people away because they don't have space.
