Winterize Home, Save Money

EL PASO, Texas -- Experts said the fall season is the perfect time to start winterizing your home. For example, you could prevent pipes from freezing by making sure they're insulated.Simple maintenance to prepare for winter can save you more than a $100."There's a lot of ways to winterize the home. This is really something that everybody should think about because it conserves energy and it saves you money especially on the heating costs,” said Tish Rodriguez from Home Depot."The economy is causing me to do it. It's costing too much money to keep the house warm if I don't,” said Joe Maeze of West El Paso.Home Depot experts recommend you seal windows and all doors, even garage doors."A lot of people don't think they really need to insulate their garage, but garage door insulation on the bottom flap if you close up that gap, you’re going to keep the temperature at a higher level in your garage,” said Rodriguez.For those of you with older homes that may have single pane windows, shrink film insulation makes the difference in keeping the draft out."Window insulation, basically it's like shrink wrapping something, you cut the plastic to size. There's a self-adhesive around the window and then you use your blow dryer to shrink the plastic onto the window,” Rodriguez said.If you want to be energy efficient, here are some must-have items to help you stay warm and save cash. Cover your windows and doors with DAP or High Density Foam Tape. A Water Heater Insulation Blanket to keep the water temperature warmer. Outlet Sealers are recommended to keep air from coming in through your outlets. But experts said the biggest money saver is replacing furnace filters. The cleaner the filter, the easier for air to get through and keep nominal temperatures.Some El Pasoans KFOX caught up with said these items have really made a difference in their home and on their bills."It cuts down. It doesn't clog up the furnace, it doesn't strain it and we get good clean air," said Maeze.“I got to insulate my sprinkler system outside because that's something I can't turn off,” Rocky Evans of West El Paso said.
