5-Year-Old Mistakenly Boards Bus After School

Rambunctious 5-year-old Samantha Garcia wasn't watched close enough after school, according to her mother. Robin Garcia said her daughter was allowed to board a day care bus and taken away to a day care she doesn't attend.

"Then they go, 'Ma'am we don't know where your child is.' I was baffled," said Garcia.

Garcia said she asked her sister-in-law to pick up Samantha because she was running late. Robin realized Samantha was missing when her sister-in-law arrived at Fannin Elementary School.

"They had said she went with somebody in a silver car with a lady in it. I don't know anyone with a silver car," said Garcia.

The district sent out a statement that reads:

"The El Paso Independent School District is deeply concerned that a student mistakenly boarded a daycare bus. Every campus in the district has procedures to identify whether a parent or daycare is to pick up a student. We rely greatly on the communication between our parents and staff to ensure the process goes smoothly. We will continue to improve our communications with parents to ensure that a situation of this nature does not happen again."

"They need to revamp their policies on the little kids when they're getting picked up, either get name tags for them with their emergency contacts for them," said Garcia.

After three hours of frantically looking for her daughter, she was notified that she was at the Children's Place Daycare on Salem. KFOX wanted to know why it took so long for the day care to realize they had a child that didn't belong there, but the owner did not want to comment.

"Having her back has made me look at life as very short and I don't ever want to see anything happen to my kids," said Garcia.

Garcia said she transferred her child to another elementary. Her last day at Fannin is Friday.
