Giuliani Rallies For McCain In Mesilla

It’s anyone’s guess which presidential nominee will carry New Mexico on Nov. 4, but both parties are pulling out all stops as the day nears.

Early voting in New Mexico ended at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Democratic Party rallied at Albert Johnson Park throughout the afternoon to encourage people to vote. Candidates present included Harry Teague, who is running for New Mexico’s Congressional District 2, and Tom Udall, who is on the ticket for U.S. Senator.

During the rally, candidates asked everyone in the crowd to call someone on their cell phones and ask them to head to the polls. Meanwhile, outside of the library, voters lined up to cast their ballot. Some people had to wait half an hour, but with all the political-hype surrounding New Mexico, they said they didn’t mind.

“I think it’s really exciting because for the first time we can either have a woman vice president or an African-American president for our country. I think that's really ground breaking,” said Heather Lang, of Las Cruces.

New Mexico is still up for grabs, but candidates are asking voters to pick a side.

“I think that by me being here today is going to further state to the people of Las Cruces and Dona Ana that I do want their vote, and that the Democratic Party wants their vote. Hopefully that will cause a few votes to come in for Barack Obama also,” said Teague.

At about 6 p.m., the McCain Straight Talk Express bus pulled up to Public Safety Park in Mesilla. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani showed up to sway voters for the Republicans. KFOX had a one-on-one interview with Giuliani.

KFOX: "Do you feel the McCain campaign is having to play defense?"

Giuliani: "There's no time to play offense or defense at this stage in the campaign. You just go for every vote that you can. Last time it was a close election."

General Wesley Clark plans to rally for Obama on Sunday. The event will be held at VFW Post 6917, 5845 Bataan Memorial West, and begins at 4:30 p.m.

Polls in Dona Ana County open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 4.

Even though New Mexico only has five electoral votes, it's extremely important for both presidential candidates. Historically, whoever has carried New Mexico has also become president.
