Construction Company Doesn't Pay Employee

Lawrence Huey is a construction worker for Spartan Construction Services Inc. He said he's giving the company the benefit of the doubt after Huey said he's gone four weeks without getting paid.

Huey is currently working on federal government project at the Santa Fe Bridge laying down pipe work for improvements. He said he shows up to work everyday hoping he'll get what's owed to him. Friday was pay day again, and he didn't get a check.

I'm frustrated that I can't get anything done," said Huey, who claims to be out of $600. He said rent is past due, and his electric bill is late.

However, Huey said every time he's tried contacting his boss, Paul Flynn, he gets the run around.

"'I have the checks.' 'I haven't signed them.' 'Call me back in an hour.' 'I have the checks, but I haven't signed them, and I'm in a meeting.' 'Call me back in an hour,'" said Huey, who's frustrated that every time he calls the story changes.

"'OK, your checks are ready; you can come pick them up.' 'Oh, that was a mistake on my part.' 'There's no funding. He (Flynn) went to the bank and there's no funding,'" said Huey about his conversation with the company's secretary.

KFOX attempted to get answers from Flynn, the owner of Spartan Construction Services, Inc., but he refused to comment and said his attorney advised him not to speak. Flynn wouldn't give KFOX information on his attorney.

"I got responsibilities, and I need to take care of them," said Huey.

Aside from the late bills, Huey doesn't have money to buy the right kind of diapers for his 7-month-old baby. The baby has developed a rash.

While Huey's frustration continues to build, he wants to send his boss a message. "Mr. Flynn, no disrespect. I enjoyed working for company. I want to continue working for your company. The only thing I ask is number one, if I can get what's owed to me, or number two, if you can kind of help with the situation so I'm not put on the street, and my electricity isn't turned off," he said.

Huey's landlord hasn't evicted him and his wife yet. He said he tried asking his boss for a loan to get through these tough times, and was told the company doesn't offer loans.

According to Huey, two of his other co-workers haven't been paid either.
