Northwind Wall To Cost Estimated $1 Million

In mid-July, KFOX told you about the rock wall behind homes in West El Paso. The wall was damaged and threatened the homes below. The city forced the residents to leave, and then they began construction.

"It's drained my savings account, it's costing me time with my children, it's costing canceled vacation plans as well, it's costing a lot of time and money," said Gina Cordova.

The city forced Cordova to leave her home on July 18, and her family has been living in rental houses ever since.

It was on a rainy September day, while construction was only getting started, that her home was hit by a flash flood.

"The water did come into the house, through the dining area, and the master bedroom. So the master bedroom, dining area, living room and master bath and the other bathroom got completely trashed," Cordova told KFOX.

The city on Tuesday asked for an estimated $1 million for the emergency construction project from the City Council. Alan Shubert with city engineering said people like Cordova will get paid back for the damage done.

"That's obviously part of a claims process, we're working with the residents right now to resolve those things to try to repair things back the way they were pre-construction," said Shubert.

But Cordova said she has heard nothing yet about a claims process or anything else about construction, her home or the new wall.

"We haven't gotten any response from the city at all. You know, nobody has taken responsibility for anything. There is lack of communication," said Cordova.
