Credit Union Says: We're Still Lending

It’s no secret that loans and credit cards help make the financial world go around. But with the economic crunch, for some, getting credit has been a tough task.

"It's very hard,” said Connie Vilorio, who works as a realtor. “They can do it, you know, but it's hard."

"Thank God we haven't needed to get any," said Luis Rico, who owns a construction company.

At GECU in El Paso, managers said they have no problem with lending a few dollars.

"We have had an excellent year here at GECU,” said Crystal Long, GECU senior vice president of lending and remote services. “We continue to have and make loans on a daily basis."

The company gives part of the credit to El Paso's somewhat shielded economy. The city hasn't seen as many foreclosures as other parts of the country.

"One of the things I'm proud to say is that we've never foreclosed on any mortgage loan,” said Long. “We make mortgage loans daily.”

While tough economic times are forcing stores like Ireland's Furniture and Savvy clothing store to close, city officials tell KFOX that two manufacturing companies are trying to bring their businesses to El Paso.

Credit not only impacts the consumer but also business owners who need short term loans.

"We haven't felt it,” said Rico.

GECU management said some customers have come in concerned about their money being protected. Even with some of the banks collapsing, some said they believe their dollars are safe in a bank or credit union.

"We don't have any choice,” said Vilorio. “ Where you gonna put it? Under the mattress. You have to put it in a bank.
