Could City Of Socorro Allow Mobile Homes Again

Posted: 6:51 pm MDT October 15, 2008Updated: 9:17 pm MDT October 20, 2008

The city of Socorro may allow mobile homes into the city once again if an existing ordinance gets modified.

Rene Moreno owns this single-wide mobile home. He'd like to move it to an empty lot which he owns in the Moon City area in old Socorro.

"I don't have a lot of money. I'm trying to live off with what I can and trying to provide my kids the best I can," said Moreno.

Moreno said in the place where he live now his kids can't come out and play. They have a small property with room for only his vehicle, that's why he want's to improve their quality of life.

"My kids can't come out and play in the yard like I'd like them to. This isn't a safe area for them to come out and play. They have no where to go out and stretch their legs," said Moreno.

What's stopping him from moving is a 1989 city ordinance which prohibits mobile homes. That ordinance is undergoing modification to allow double-wide mobile homes. City council member Sergio Cox said single-wide mobile homes should also be allowed but only in old neighborhoods in Socorro.

"I believe that single-wides are a necessity in Socorro because of the economy," said Cox.

"I feel that it's unnecessary to change the law in existence since 1989," said Socorro Mayor Trini Lopez.

Lopez said there should be few acceptions.

"There are some instances in Socorro they can go through. For example, they can go through board of adjustment for a special permit so they can come in with the single-wides," said Lopez.

Cox said not allowing single-wide mobile homes would shut the door on a lot of citizens.

"I don't feel it's right for we the citizens of Socorro should turn our back on our own. People have to live within their means," said Cox.

Another issue has to do with taxable growth within the community. A double-wide mobile home would obviously yield higher property taxes than a single-wide. Opponents said allowing double-wides because of the amount of tax revenue is discrimination. Socorro residents will have an opportunity to voice their opinion next week during a public hearing. The hearing will take place on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. at Socorro City Hall.
