"Those Who Host Lose The Most" Campaign

The El Paso police department and Rio Grande Safe Communities wrap up their six week campaign to catch underage drinkers and the ones hosting the parties.

Several weeks ago we rode along with El Paso police officers as they cracked down on underage drinkers.

"You can see that there's a lot of activity here, a lot of cars. A lot of people are showing up and it's probably 18 and over tonight. These cars are going to be the ones going home at one, two o'clock in the morning."

Officers working overtime kept a close eye on night clubs and house parties, catching more than 100 underage drinkers in the act.

"We walked into the house and we observed all the beer cans stashed in planters, thrown in trash cans, ice chest full with beer and a lot of bottles of liquor.” Officer Michael Sanchez with the El Paso Police Department described the scene. "What happens is people start jumping rock walls and trying to leave."

Officers said the way most teens find out about the parties is through text messaging that's easily spread through friends.

"They’re at a party they get behind the wheel trying to get home and they can get into a crash and die,” said Adriana Cadena of Rio Grande Safe Communities.

During the 'Those Who Host Lose The Most' campaign officers issued 150 citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor, 37 for minor in possession, 19 to minors caught drinking and driving and 2 adults were arrested for providing alcohol and hosting a party.

“Really what this was about is saving their lives and asking adults to be responsible and taking a part in preventing underage drinking,” said Cadena.

The El Paso Police Department told KFOX that 28 percent of alcohol related crashes resulting in deaths have been underage drinkers, which is an increase from last year. Police will keep looking for those hosting the parties and for underage drinkers but they say they need your help.

If you know there's a party in or around your neighborhood where there are underage drinkers you’re urged to call crime stoppers at 566-8477.
